THE BRIEF

In early 2024, West Northamptonshire Council announced a major public realm project to revitalize Northampton’s main shopping streets, Abington Street and Fish Street. The project aimed to enhance the visual appeal, connectivity, and sustainability of the area, complementing the larger Market Square transformation. The redevelopment plan, developed after a thorough public consultation, focused on introducing new paving, seating, trees, and landscaping to create inviting spaces for the community.

S&D and Kier Transportation collaborated extensively with the local Council from the outset, ensuring the project would be carefully planned and executed to minimize disruption while maintaining pedestrian safety and access to local businesses. The project was scheduled to begin in February 2024, with a nine-month timeline.

THE DELIVERY

The project was divided into four distinct phases:

Phase 1 – Fish Street Revitalization:

The initial focus was on Fish Street, the key connection between Abington and St Giles Street. This phase involved the removal of old paving, renewal of drainage systems, and installation of new ducting for lighting and security features. New granite paving was installed, embellished with brass and cast bronze fish motifs and lettering on the kerbs to reflect local heritage.

Phase 2 – Abington Street Development:

Moving to Abington Street, work included the installation of improved drainage, ducting, and high-quality granite paving. Street furniture such as benches, seating areas, and planters were introduced to create communal spaces for pedestrians to relax and interact.

Phase 3 & 4 – Tree Pits and Market Square Intersection:

These phases focused on the introduction of tree-lined pedestrian areas, sculptured seating, and informal play zones. Phase 4 saw the intersection of Abington Street with the Market Square regeneration, where Yorkstone slabs and new granite kerbing were laid, with the carriageway resurfaced for a smooth, modern finish.

Throughout the project, safety and minimal disruption were prioritized. Comprehensive traffic management and strongwall barriers were implemented to segregate work areas, while pedestrian marshals ensured public access to shops and businesses.

THE RESULT

The redevelopment of Abington and Fish Street achieved its goal of transforming the public realm, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of Northampton’s central shopping streets. The addition of new paving, trees, and seating, along with playful and communal elements like picnic tables, fostered greater social interaction and created a more vibrant, welcoming environment.

By focusing on sustainability and accessibility, the project not only improved the town's visual landscape but also boosted economic activity by encouraging foot traffic and longer stays in the area. As a result, Northampton town center has become a more attractive destination for locals and visitors, contributing to the town's broader regeneration on social, environmental, and economic levels.
